Salaries for 3,000 Miami-Dade County employees released;

many earn more than $100,000

More than 3,300 Miami-Dade County employees took home more than $100,000 in pay during the budget year that recently ended, according to documents published Monday by a local blog.
Random Pixels and Loose Talk published the documents, which totaled 79 pages listing 3,301 county employees with take-home pay of more than $100,000 for the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30.
The mayor's biography on the county website says the county employs more than 28,000 people, and that would mean six-figure earners make up more than 10 percent of the workforce, Random Pixels reported.
WSVN Fox 7 reported that police officers and firefighters accounted for about 1,400 people on the list, with many of their salaries enhanced by earning thousands of dollars in overtime.
``That's a clear example of our officers being understaffed and having to work extraordinary long hours,'' John Rivera, president of the Dade County Police Benevolent Association, told WSVN.
WSVN also reported that about 75 county employees were paid more than $200,000. Of that group, more than half were in the county attorney's office, WSVN said.
WSVN said it couldn't reach Mayor Carlos Alvarez for comment.
Miami-Dade Commissioner Carlos Gimenez did speak to WSVN about the documents, saying, ``That, to me, is a little bit excessive, especially in light of today's fiscal reality.''
